  • Our Curriculum

Learn about the Montessori class curriculum

Children have natural tendencies to explore and learn from the world around them.  We affirm the unique nature of each child with accepting where he/she is in each area of development.

A positive environment with a blend of creative play and education are important during this time.  Here at New Day Preschool, we provide a caring and nurturing environment where your child can learn through positive play and hands-on-activities.

Young children absorb information like sponges and love to learn.  While providing our students with creative activities, we instill excitement and enthusiasm of learning by helping them explore new ideas and adding new meanings to their environment.

One of our fundamental philosophies is using a phonetic based curriculum to develop basic reading skills beginning with our preschool students continuing on through our kindergarten students.  Using this phonetic approach, the children learn to read quite easily.  Learning the basic fundamentals also helps them to make inferences to no-phonetic words.

    Language

The students learn to read through a phonetic based program.  Montessori materials break down complex skills into small steps.  For example: children gain pencil control by tracing around metal stencils.  They learn letter sounds and proper writing skills by finger tracing sandpaper letters and repeating the sounds into words, which are used as their first reading experience.  Language activities and books are chosen for the children at each level of learning.  This helps to create a strong base in writing, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension.  This will give the students a strong foundation to last a lifetime.

    mathematics

Montessori math curriculum is composed of many hands on materials and manipulatives.  Tangible materials are accessible to children so they can easily learn concepts, operations and numerical relationships.  For example: they feel and see what the number ten is by handling ten counters and matching them to the number 10.  Children do not sit down and memorize abstract facts, but rather discover that they know them when they apply math concepts to real life situations.  Children also investigate two and three dimensional shapes, measurements, graphs, time and money.  We work with the children to develop a strong foundation in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and the decimal system.

    Science

New Day Preschool’s science program is based on the Montessori Method designed to teach specific scientific concepts, while working, hands-on with the science materials.  We focus on many different aspects of science including:  Botany, Biology, Anatomy, Astronomy, and many more.  As your children attend our program year after year, they build on knowledge they received in the previous year.

    Geography

The students start out exploring the Earth using a small globe.  Each continent has a special color which stays the same through our study of the continents in order to help with recognition.  The students move on to learning the names and placement of all seven continents through making their own maps.  They also learn about the culture, animals, and special characteristics of each continent.

    Special Activities

Kindermusik and Foreign Language classes are also provided on pre-selected days.  We set aside at least 30 minutes per week for each activity.
